What is "smart growth"? What are four smart-growth strategies that address urban sprawl?

well im glad you asked this question. smart growth is maximizing the use of land and resources. suburban and urban sprawl is to have large housing developments for example that have no industrial or commercial interests nearby which makes the automobile a necessity, it also takes alot more land to develop communities in that manner. one idea for smart growth is mixed use development, this is something i strongly advocate. mixed use are large developments of higher density that encorporate housing, industrial and commercial interests together to form a nice downtown with shops, restaurants, businesses and office space and it maximizes efficient use of the land and makes the use of a car optional. i advocate higher density housing and mixed use because large suburban homes on ten or more acres are a thing of the past, the planning of those developments were horrible, they didnt take the environment or smart architecture into account, i personally hope one day to live in a mixed use development, they are efficient and effective and allow more people to live in a concentrated area than suburban and urban sprawl would allow. there are many different approaches to smart planning such as apartments over shopping centers to allow people to live without cars and live in a higher density setting. smart growth is basically to maximize use of land. developers in america say who cares theres tons of land everywhere but one day that will not be true, and as the population of our nation increases rapidly we will run out of land and have to start rethinking some of the former development decisions we hade made. i hope this helps you.

Smart Growth is supposed to mean Growing up, not out.

High density housing instead of single houses on lots.
Regional centers where you can live and work without commuting.
Where commuting is necessary there is a big concentration of people to make public transit viable.

By not building freeways, it is thought that people would be more willing to put up with the bad parts of high density living, rather than trying to commute on under built roads.
