Google Internet Summit 2009: The State of the Internet

Welcoming remarks by Eric Schmidt.

On May 5 and 6, 2009, in Mountain View, we brought together Googlers and leaders from academia and the corporate world for a 2-day summit to discuss the state of the global Internet. The goal of the summit was to collect a wide range of knowledge to inform Google’s future plans–from product development and market reach to users’ expectations and our ability to keep the Internet open yet secure.

More than 30 speakers and moderators led discussions around 8 topics: Networks; Wireless and Sensor Technologies; Security; Standards; Applications; Democracy, Law, Policy and Regulation; Search and Cloud Computing; and The Future. Eric Schmidt, who offered some remarks, expressed optimism that the challenges we face with governments’ walling off access to the Internet can be overcome technologically by building networks that are transparent, scalable, and open.

Jeff Jarrett recently did a big interview with Newsday.com. Here are the highlights:

On the TNA schedule: I once worked for both companies WWE and WCW and I realized what working over 20 days a month could do to, not just your body, but almost your mental outlook, your life, your family life. Youve got to be able to balance everything in life. I dont believe theres a guy in the company thats on the road more than 15 days a month, and I certainly know theyre not wrestling more than 15 days a month. [] There comes a time when the body says, No more. Or the wife, and family and kids say, No more. Thats just as important.

On WWE vs. TNA: I think our roster right now is the best roster in wrestling today. Ive always said it takes some prime time players, it takes some veterans, it takes some up and comers, and it takes some strictly real young, youthful talent. And I think thats what we have. From top to bottom, Im very, very proud of our roster. And I think our growth It goes without saying were on a network that we are the highest rated show. Our ratings are growing. Spikes primetime average is, I think, a .9. And were doing 1.3s. I think USAs primetime average is well into the 2s, and Vince is above that. So comparatively speaking, on the network were on, I think weve done very well. Are we bigger or better than them in the ratings? Absolutely not. But we continue to climb that ladder.

We continue to grow in all aspects. Internationally, in several markets, we not only tie WWE, but we beat them. So, from an international standpoint, were doing very, very well.

On the recent iMPACT ratings increase: I think if you look at our history dont really look at that week-to-week-to-week snapshot if you look at where we started three years ago at a .7 or a .8, and weve grown to a 1.3. And its been a steady growth It went from Saturday nights for one hour, to Thursday nights to one hour, to two hours. Theres momentum being built behind us. The addition of certain key members of the roster – On one side youve got probably the greatest conglomeration of a faction, if you want to call it that, the Main Event Mafia. Kurt Angle, every member of the Main Event Mafia has been a world champion and has a storied career. And on the other side youve got Mick Foley and myself and 3D. Youve got A.J. Styles and Samoa Joe who are in the mix and are youthful and young. Youve got several other young pieces of talent. Youve got the X Division.

Is he happy with TNAs progress?: You look at where weve come. Weve gone from a .7, .8 to a 1.3 on Spike. You can look at ECW. They started in the high 2s, and now theyre in the 1.2, 1.3 range a tremendous drop. Smackdown you cant really count because theyve changed networks. Theyve had their issues, but as a matter of fact, theyve done extremely well. You look at Raw. They went, over the last three or four years, they went from the 4s to the 3s, and now theyre back up there. So its an ebb and flow. And they tout themselves as the longest running series. Its phenomenon that from 1993 to 2009, theyve been on 17 years. Theyve got a 14-year, 15-year head start on us.
So am I satisfied? Absolutely, Im very satisfied. Talk to the network heads at Spike TV and ask them. Am I happy? As a businessman, weve got to keep growing. Weve got to keep growing the product internationally, domestically. Weve got to keep hitting on all cylinders. So I think thats maybe a two-sided question. I hope Im articulating myself right.
On Vince McMahon calling TNA reprehensible: Thats classic Vince being classic Vince. He didnt get where hes at by being a dumb ass. But for him to call us reprehensible is laughable. You always want to cross that line. But then, you dont want to explode it or nuclear bomb it. You just want to step over it, and cross the line. We want the competitors in our organization to cross the line, and try new things and be innovative in the ring. It is professional wrestling.
On not having any WWF or WCW footage for his DVDs: I call it the Bret Hart syndrome. Bret has literally, probably laid awake many, many nights. His entire career is owned by Vince McMahon. Bret, he worked for WWF for all those years, and then briefly for WCW. But Vince owns it all. So, its a little bit frustrating, but thats the business. Vince is smart businessman, and thats why he bought the libraries. The way he acquired WCW, it nothing short of sheer genius. Ill say theres a personal relationship with the entire McMahon family and Jeff Jarrett. As far as a working relationship absolutely not. Were competitors. But a personal relationship? The entire McMahon family was very, very good to me during the passing of my wife, and thats something Ill never forget.

Islam (what it is?) – “Islam” means (surrender; submission; obedience; peace)
Islam is a verb and a noun at the same time.
The first meaning of “Islam” is the verb from the root “aslama” (a verb), meaning to: “surrender; submit; obey; sincerity and in peace.”
The second meaning of “Islam” is the noun form from the same root, and it describes the last and final form of the way of life as perscribed by the Creator for His Creation. This is the name used in Quran for Muslims to call themselves as followers of “Islam”. This would make them “Islam-ers” in English, but of course in Arabic the prefix “mu” is added to denote the one preforming the action or verb and instead it becomes “mu”-”islam” or “Muslim.”
“Islam” can be understood in a very general sense to be the true religion of God, as it is from Him and according to His commandments without adding to or taking away from the basic precepts.
